Relatives

• Jakob von Knorring (1789- 1862, Paslepa) — Sophie’s father, a participant in the Napoleonic Wars, who entered civil service in the Governorate of Estonia in 1821 with the rank of Actual State Councillor. He belonged to the ancient noble family of Baltic Germans, the Knorrings, known since the 16th century. In the diary, he often appears as a strict and unyielding head of the family, whose opinion is decisive, especially in matters of his daughter’s marriage. Her mother, Luise, née Bacheracht, was a representative of another influential dynasty of St. Petersburg merchants. In the diary, she serves as Sophie’s main support, wise advisor, and confidante in her heart and social affairs. In 1841, they were 18 and 15 years old, respectively. The girls spent their time together doing needlework, reading, playing music, and sharing news. • Otto von Kursell (d. 1885) — a retired major, owner of the Sinalep (Sinalepa) estate, and the main romantic hero of the first part of the diary. In January 1841, he asks for Sophie’s hand in marriage but is refused. Despite this, he continues his persistent courtship: his sister Betty acts as a negotiator, and he actively seeks encounters at social receptions, alternating between ostentatiously ignoring Sophie and showing friendliness. In August, after much torment for Sophie, an engagement takes place, which is broken off a few days later on her initiative, driving the groom to a severe illness. Even in St. Petersburg, conversations about him do not subside, and Sophie confesses that she rejected him due to an inexplicable physical aversion. (Mentioned in the diary: January 5, January 16, January 22, January 23, January 24, January 26, May 1, May 11, May 15, August 2–4, August 13–14, August 16, September 2, September 4–7, December 31.)
• Arthur Knorring (1823–1889) — a student at the University of Dorpat and the grandson of General Otto von Knorring, whose portrait hangs in the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace. He frequently visits his uncle Pontus’s house in St. Petersburg and enjoys the clear sympathy of Sophie, who notes that she “likes him very much” and considers him a “very nice person.” Arthur participates in home entertainment, discusses a Romani (Gypsy) choir with Sophie, and even engages in theological disputes with her about the nature of joy and sorrow. He later marries Olga Yazykova, whom Sophie had seen when she was still a child. (Mentioned in the diary: January 20, January 24, February 2–3, February 5, February 7–10, February 13–16.)
• Nikolai Knorring — a distant relative of Sophie, an officer, and treasurer of the elite Chevalier Guard Regiment. He regularly appears at family dinners and evening gatherings at Uncle Pontus’s house. In the diary, Sophie ironically notes how her sister Hélène flirts with him, and on another occasion describes how, in the pre-ball commotion, he helps arrange her cousin Louise’s outfit. (Mentioned in the diary: October 26, January 23, February 1, February 20.)
• Louise von Knorring (1824–1893) — Sophie’s cousin, the daughter of her Uncle Pontus and Aunt Louise. Sophie lives in their house after arriving in St. Petersburg. In the diary, she is described as an active participant in the capital’s social life: she attends balls at the Cancrin and Vorontsov residences, prepares for a masquerade hosted by Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna (for which she rehearses a special quadrille), and attends the French theater with Sophie. She later becomes a maid of honor to the Empress and marries Count Tiesenhausen. (Mentioned in the diary: October 28, October 29, October 31, November 6, November 10–14, November 17–19, December 2, December 4, December 6–7, December 13–14, December 16–17, December 19, December 21, January 12–13, January 15–19, January 21, January 24, February 22.)
• Celestine Kaulbars (1796–1883) — Sophie’s maternal cousin-aunt and the sister of Joseph Velho. In her youth, she was acquainted with Alexander Pushkin in Tsarskoye Selo. According to historian Sergei Gavrilov, Celestine might have served as the prototype for the Weaver (Tkachikha) character in The Tale of Tsar Saltan—more details on this can be found in the article “The Three Velho Sisters.” In the diary, she is mentioned in connection with an invitation Sophie received to a social event. (Mentioned in the diary: January 23.)
• Katharine (Kitty) von Knorring (1837 Reval – 1840 Paslepa) — Sophie’s younger sister, who died in December 1840 at the age of three. The grief over her loss is one of the main reasons for Sophie’s melancholy at the beginning of the diary. Her birthday, November 26, is marked as a particularly difficult day, filled with prayers and memories. (Mentioned in the diary: January, November 16, November 26).
• Vladimir (Pontus) Karlovich von Knorring (1784 – 1864) — Sophie’s uncle, her father’s brother, a General of the Cavalry and Adjutant General. From 1835-1847, he commanded the Guards Reserve Cavalry Corps. He is known for having petitioned the emperor to pardon M.Y. Lermontov after his first duel. (Mentioned in the diary: January 14, September 10, September 12, September 24, September 29, October 1, November 5, November 7, November 13, November 15, November 17, November 19, November 20, November 21, January 27, February 1, February 2, February 5, February 6, February 17).

(Mentioned in the diary: September 22, October 3, November 6, November 8, November 14, January 21, February 5, February 12, February 15, February 19).
• Luise Severin, née Bacheracht — Sophie’s maternal grandmother, a representative of an influential dynasty of St. Petersburg merchants and bankers of Dutch origin. • Helene von Knorring, née von Lantingshausen (1761 Reval – 1843 Kedik) — Sophie’s paternal grandmother. Sophie visits her at the Kedik estate. The grandmother expresses open displeasure with the breaking of her granddaughter’s engagement, believing that she would not find a better match. (Mentioned in the diary: May 4, August 12, August 18, September 12).
• Pyotr Andreevich Severin (d. 1842) — Sophie’s uncle, her mother’s brother. In 1841-1842, he was undergoing treatment in Hamburg, where he died. Judging by the entries, in her youth, Sophie had a special, perhaps childish, crush on him and was very worried by the news of his illness. (Mentioned in the diary: May 15, May 22, August 5, August 13, November 16, January 18).
• Wilhelmina (Minna) Severin — Sophie’s aunt, her mother’s unmarried sister. She is Sophie’s constant companion in St. Petersburg, accompanying her on visits, shopping trips, and walks. Notable Figures of the Nobility

• Emperor Nicholas I — the reigning monarch of the Russian Empire and brother of Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich. In Sophie’s diary, he appears not only as the head of state but also as an active participant in the capital’s social life. She sees him during the ceremonial procession at the Winter Palace on the occasion of his name day, observes him at the brilliant Nobility Ball—where he pointedly ignores the French envoy Auguste Périer—and even encounters him driving in a simple sleigh along Liteiny Prospect. Sophie’s uncle, Pontus Knorring, is also granted the honor of being invited to dine with the Emperor. (Mentioned in the diary: December 6, December 7, December 16, January 21, January 31)
• Empress Alexandra Feodorovna — the wife of Emperor Nicholas I. Sophie repeatedly sees her at court festivities and describes her with great attention to detail. At a celebration in the Winter Palace, she notes her luxurious white satin gown, trimmed with marabout feathers and studded with solitaire diamonds. Her fragile health frequently affected the court calendar: due to the Empress’s illness, the New Year’s court reception (kurtag) was canceled. Sophie also happens to meet her while walking along the embankment with her beautiful daughter, Olga. (Mentioned in the diary: December 6, December 7, December 16, January 6, February 11)
• Grand Duchesses Olga, Maria, and Alexandra Nikolaevna — the daughters of Emperor Nicholas I and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. Sophie watches them with admiration at court balls. Olga Nikolaevna, a blonde in pink, is called the “ideal of beauty” by Sophie. Maria Nikolaevna, the future Duchess of Leuchtenberg, strikes her with her regal bearing, while the youngest, Alexandra (“Alexandrine”), impresses with her liveliness and grace. During the Nobility Ball, Sophie stands so close that she watches them dance a quadrille opposite each other. (Mentioned in the diary: December 6, December 7, December 16, January 20, February 11)
• Tsesarevich Alexander Nikolaevich — the heir to the Russian throne, the future Emperor Alexander II. In April 1841, his wedding to Princess Marie of Hesse (in Orthodoxy, Maria Alexandrovna) took place, becoming one of the main social events of the year. Sophie notes his presence at court balls and encounters him during a walk, describing him as “rather plump and pale,” but with a “truly very pleasant, amiable face.” (Mentioned in the diary: May 4, December 6, December 7, December 16, February 19)
• Tsesarevna Maria Alexandrovna (née Princess Marie of Hesse) — the wife of the heir to the throne, Alexander Nikolaevich. Her wedding, which took place in April 1841, is mentioned at the very beginning of the diary. Sophie observes her at court balls and gives her an honest but generally positive assessment: the Tsesarevna has an excellent figure and beautiful dark eyes, although not the most imperial posture. At the Nobility Ball, she was dressed in a blue gown and danced a quadrille opposite the Grand Duchesses. (Mentioned in the diary: May 4, December 6, December 7, December 16)
• Duchess Therese of Oldenburg (née Princess Therese Wilhelmine of Nassau) — the wife of Prince Peter of Oldenburg, a renowned philanthropist and founder of the Imperial School of Jurisprudence. She is a relative of the imperial family through her mother’s line (the sister of Empress Maria Feodorovna, wife of Paul I). Sophie sees her as part of the ceremonial procession during the celebration of the Emperor’s name day at the Winter Palace. (Mentioned in the diary: December 6)
• Auguste Casimir-Perier — the French chargé d’affaires in St. Petersburg. Sophie became an unwitting witness to a major diplomatic scandal in 1841. The French envoy ostentatiously ignored a reception hosted by the Emperor, which resulted in his ostracism by St. Petersburg high society. At the Nobility Ball, Nicholas I walked right past him without granting him a glance; however, as Sophie was descending the stairs, she encountered him and, unaware of the boycott, happily returned his greeting. (Mentioned in the diary: December 16)
• Alexander Nikolaevich, Tsesarevich — Heir to the Russian throne, the future Emperor Alexander II. In April 1841, his wedding to Princess Marie of Hesse (known in Orthodoxy as Maria Alexandrovna) took place, becoming one of the main social events of the year. Sophie notes his presence at court balls and encounters him during a walk, describing him as “rather plump and pale,” but with a “truly very pleasant, welcoming face.” (Mentioned in the diary: May 4, December 6, December 7, December 16, February 19).
• Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich — Grand Duke, younger brother of the reigning Emperor Nicholas I. He was known for his habit of strolling through St. Petersburg on foot without a grand retinue and was noted for his affability. Sophie encounters him several times during walks along Liteyny Prospect and the embankment, noting that he would readily stop to chat. His Mikhailovsky Palace hosted high-society receptions and masquerades attended by Sophie’s relatives. (Mentioned in the diary: December 29, December 1, February 2, February 28).
• Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna — Grand Duchess, widow of Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich. She was one of the central figures of St. Petersburg high society, mistress of a famous salon, and organizer of luxurious masquerades at the Mikhailovsky Palace. Sophie describes her magnificent outfits at court balls in detail, noting an abundance of diamonds, roses, and marabou feathers. Her eldest daughter, Grand Duchess Maria Mikhailovna, is also mentioned among the members of the imperial family. (Mentioned in the diary: December 6, December 7, February 2, February 17).
• Georg Cancrin (Egor Frantsevich Kankrin) — The all-powerful Minister of Finance of the Russian Empire from 1823 to 1844. Balls at his home were famous throughout St. Petersburg and considered among the most prestigious society events, second only to court balls. An invitation to a ball at the Cancrins’ meant belonging to the very apex of the capital’s elite. (Mentioned in the diary: December 2, February 18).
• Mikhail Semyonovich and Elizaveta Ksaveryevna Vorontsov — Count Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov and his wife Elizaveta Ksaveryevna, née Branitskaya, wife of the Governor-General of New Russia, Count Mikhail Vorontsov. She was known as one of the foremost beauties of her time and served as the muse and romantic interest of the poet Alexander Pushkin during his southern exile. Balls hosted in their St. Petersburg palace were considered among the most magnificent in the capital. (Mentioned in the diary: November 13, February 4, February 15).
• Maria Ivanovna Kochubey (1818–1843) — Princess, née Princess Baryatinskaya. She was one of the most brilliant and famous beauties of Pushkin’s St. Petersburg, daughter of the diplomat I. I. Baryatinsky. Tragically, just a year and a half after meeting Sophie at the theater, the young princess suddenly died of a fever. Princess Maria Baryatinskaya-Kochubey is the author of an unpublished diary containing entries about Pushkin and d’Anthès. (Mentioned in the diary: November 13).
• Ivan Onufrievich Sukhozanet — General of the Artillery. His spouse, Ekaterina Alexandrovna, née Princess Beloselskaya-Belozerskaya (1804–1861), owned a mansion on Nevsky Prospect where she hosted society receptions. Sophie saw her at the Assembly of Nobles’ Ball, and her relatives attended dinner parties and balls at their home. (Mentioned in the diary: November 13, December 16, February 20).
• Elizaveta Alexeevna Orlova-Denisova (1817–1898) — Countess, née Nikitina, lady-in-waiting to the court (from September 14, 1832). She was the only daughter of Count Alexei Petrovich Nikitin and heiress to the entailed Kolomyagi estate. Her St. Petersburg house on Liteyny Prospect was considered one of the most “bon ton” in the capital. She was regarded as one of the “lionesses” of high society. (Mentioned in the diary: November 27).
• Pyotr Andreyevich and Vera Fedorovna Vyazemsky — Prince Pyotr Vyazemsky was a well-known poet and literary critic, while his wife, Princess Vera Fyodorovna (1790–1886), née Princess Gagarina, was a close friend of Alexander Pushkin. Their salon was frequented by many aristocrats. Sophie notes that her Aunt Louisa was friends with the Vyazemskys, and once during a walk along the embankment, the Prince himself kept them company. (Mentioned in the diary: November 28, February 12, February 19, February 28).
• Karl Gustavovich Strandmann (1787–1855) — General of the Cavalry, whose family was part of the Knorring social circle. His mother, née Charlotte Stackelberg, is also mentioned in the diary. The General’s wife, Lucia Tarczynska, is described by Sophie as “a most charming woman, extraordinarily beautiful.” (Mentioned in the diary: May 11, November 17, January 10, February 2).
• Nikolai Karlovich Toll — Young Count, son of the hero of the Patriotic War of 1812 Karl Fyodorovich Toll. Sophie describes him as “an absolutely charming person,” who had recently returned from abroad, where he was treating his leg, and entertained the ladies with stories about life in Vienna. He also took part in home games with the children and was soon to enter service in the prestigious Chevalier Guard Regiment. (Mentioned in the diary: November 17, January 5).
• Rodion Egorovich Grünewaldt (Moritz Reinhold von Grünewaldt) — Major General (later General of the Cavalry), commander of the Chevalier Guard Regiment. He was a distant relative of Sophie’s fiancé. After making Sophie’s acquaintance, he became a frequent visitor at the Knorring home in St. Petersburg, where he is described as a very amiable guest who, however, could also “boast.” (Mentioned in the diary: November 19, November 25, December 5, January 9, February 8).

His father was a nephew of Count Pyotr Pahlen, who led the conspiracy against Emperor Paul I. The young Baron pays a visit to the Knorring family at the beginning of the New Year. (Mentioned in the diary: January 17).
• Pavel Konstantinovich Alexandrov (1808–1857) — Colonel, legitimized illegitimate son of Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich (brother of Emperors Alexander I and Nicholas I).
