The next logical step, naturally, was to hand them a task researchers had puzzled over for years: visualizing the world of Pushkin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">But it is precisely here that the unexpected occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udfa8 The Illusion: Neural Networks as a Pushkinist&#8217;s Tool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial idea was quite delightfully simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a neural network is perfectly capable of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list archival-list\">\n<li>Reproducing artistic styles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Combining compositions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building scenes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;then why on earth not use it to reconstruct a sketch by Pushkin? In our correspondence, we discussed various experiments with Midjourney and other such tools. In Alexandra\u2019s publications, nineteenth-century scenes had materialized with the greatest of ease:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list archival-list\">\n<li>Correct costumes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Atmospheric lighting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plausible interiors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Take, for instance, the image of a running noblewoman: &#8220;one of the options pleased me on the very first try.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this stage, it seemed that just a little more effort would allow us to neatly &#8220;illustrate Pushkin.&#8221; But! When we actually attempted to have the AI &#8220;finish&#8221; Pushkin&#8217;s sketches, a rather curious fact emerged:<br>Pushkin is one of those authors who stubbornly resist algorithms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this became most glaringly obvious in the case of one rather small drawing\u2014&#8221;The Kiss.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity cinematic-divider\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc8b A Drawing That Gives Researchers No Peace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Pushkin left behind a splendid multitude of graphic sketches in his manuscripts\u2014from simple profiles to amusing caricatures.<br>Yet &#8220;The Kiss&#8221; occupies a rather special place among them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, it happens to be <strong>one of Pushkin&#8217;s earliest genre drawings<\/strong>\u2014<br>not merely a portrait or a passing stroke, but a fully-fledged scene involving actual action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, this drawing has long attracted the keen eye of researchers.<br><strong>Abram Efros<\/strong>, a pioneer in the study of Pushkin&#8217;s graphics, believed that &#8220;the drawing imitates academic schemes&#8221; and that &#8220;The Kiss of 1818 could well be a copy, or at the very least, a variation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexandra instantly made a rather sharp observation: the composition of Pushkin&#8217;s &#8220;The Kiss&#8221; bears a striking resemblance to Fragonard&#8217;s painting, <strong>&#8220;The Stolen Kiss.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full album-corner-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/alfoart.com\/derionzini\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Picture1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-918\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full album-corner-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alfoart.com\/derionzini\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Picture2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alfoart.com\/derionzini\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Picture2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-923\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><em>Here, a third and quite unexpected dimension presents itself: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:100\">\u2014 <strong>Could Pushkin, consciously or subconsciously, have taken his cue from Fragonard?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The history of the painting&#8217;s time in Russia offers no straightforward answer to this little puzzle. It might possibly be a copy of a copy. It is known that the Velho sisters copied paintings by European artists during their travels abroad. However, Alexandra finds it highly unlikely that Pushkin would have copied from ladies&#8217; albums: the painting&#8217;s subject matter was far too provocative for the moral standards of the early nineteenth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This very similarity became one of the main reasons we decided to examine the drawing as a possible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list archival-list\">\n<li>Reworking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quotation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or even an attempt to reimagine a Western European model<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To test this, we politely asked the neural networks to develop Pushkin&#8217;s sketch into a full, painted picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity cinematic-divider\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2699\ufe0f Where the Impossible Begins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pushkin&#8217;s &#8220;The Kiss&#8221; is not merely a scene.<br>It is a rather tangled knot:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list archival-list\">\n<li>Biographical<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultural<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And all of this must somehow be tied together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the neural network begins to quite literally fall to pieces when attempting to hold onto:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list archival-list\">\n<li>Specific characters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Their interrelationships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And the required composition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Absolutely everything appeared, except the scene we actually wanted.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AI is perfectly capable of producing a beautiful image,<br>but it is entirely incapable of grasping the <strong>historical meaning of the scene<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full album-corner-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alfoart.com\/derionzini\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Picture3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alfoart.com\/derionzini\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Picture3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-932\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity cinematic-divider\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udde9 From Generation to Assembly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gradually, it became delightfully clear:<br>pure AI simply does not work here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of generation, one must resort to assembly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list archival-list\">\n<li>The character is created separately<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The background separately<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The details separately<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then everything is stitched together by hand<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes the final image consisted of <strong>several elements (up to five or ten)<\/strong>. In truth, this was no longer generation at all, but rather visual montage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity cinematic-divider\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>\ud83c\udfad The &#8220;Kiss&#8221; Test<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It was precisely the scene of &#8220;The Kiss&#8221; that became our primary test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because it demands, all at once:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list archival-list\">\n<li>Precise composition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognizable faces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Historical authenticity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And emotional tension<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Add to this the hypothesis of a possible connection to Fragonard\u2014<br>and the task becomes something approaching a proper art history problem. But the result was rather telling. Despite all our attempts to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list archival-list\">\n<li>Input exact prompts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use references<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Combine elements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014the scene simply refused to come together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium album-corner-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alfoart.com\/derionzini\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Picture1-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alfoart.com\/derionzini\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Picture1-1-238x350.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1104\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And in the end, the conclusion proved to be remarkably honest: &#8220;There is no need to Photoshop the kiss\u2014it was merely an experiment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity cinematic-divider\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83e\udde0 Why This Matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>This experience proved valuable not for what actually worked,<br>but for what completely failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It vividly demonstrated the absolute limits of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI performs splendidly when presented with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list archival-list\">\n<li>Typical imagery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeatable patterns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An averaged aesthetic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But it becomes hopelessly lost when faced with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list archival-list\">\n<li>Cultural memory<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complex intertextuality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Authorial intonation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And a drawing by Pushkin is precisely such a case.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\ud83e\uddfe In Lieu of a Conclusion: &#8220;<\/strong><strong>And you shall be left wondering<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At some point, we had rather fondly expected that artificial intelligence might help us better understand Pushkin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It turned out to be quite the opposite. Pushkin helped us better understand artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it became quite clear that even the most advanced modern technologies<br>cannot possibly replace what has existed for two hundred years:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 reading,<br>\u2014 interpretation,<br>\u2014 and the careful handling of imagery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because &#8220;The Kiss&#8221; is not merely a drawing.<br>It is a question. And, much like Pushkin once did, we find ourselves left wondering\u2014does AI really help at all?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity cinematic-divider\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udc8b A Hooligan&#8217;s Experiment with &#8220;The Kiss.&#8221; But What If?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But what if we were to reconstruct the kissing scene based on a rather well-known incident: Pushkin the lyceum student, the dark corridor of the maids of honor&#8217;s quarters, and a fatal error\u2014embracing a princess instead of a maid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Pushkin, to his misfortune, was alone, heard the rustle of a dress in the dark, imagined it simply must be Natasha, and threw himself to kiss her in the most innocent manner. As luck would have it, at that precise moment the door from the room opened, illuminating the scene: standing before him was Princess Volkonskaya herself.&#8221; (I. Pushchin. Absolutely ideal material for visualization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full cinematic-circle-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alfoart.com\/derionzini\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Picture2-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1120\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The difficulties began with trying to locate an accessible image of Princess Volkonskaya. As it turns out, there is not a single surviving portrait of Varvara Mikhailovna. Whatever to do? Eureka! There are mountains of portraits of her brother, the Most Serene Prince Pyotr Volkonsky. So, we fed the following task into the prompt: transform the bust portrait of the brother into a pencil portrait of the sister, age 45, in appropriate attire:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full cinematic-circle-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/alfoart.com\/derionzini\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Picture6-e1778958122280.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1121\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:60%\">\n<p>We take Pushkin the lyceum student\u2014perhaps from the famous painting by Repin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We ask the AI to imagine the kissing scene from the exact same angle as in Fragonard&#8217;s painting. Into the prompt we also slip Tsar Alexander&#8217;s rather famous remark, &#8220;La vieille est peut-\u00eatre enchant\u00e9e de la m\u00e9prise du jeune homme, entre nous soit dit&#8221; (The old maid is perhaps delighted by the young man&#8217;s mistake, strictly between us)\u2014just to give the drawing the lively feeling of a kiss stolen not entirely against the victim&#8217;s will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hooliganism? Assuredly. But entirely in the style of Pushkin the rake. It seems things aren&#8217;t quite so hopeless between Pushkin and neural networks after all&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:40%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full album-corner-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alfoart.com\/derionzini\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Picture7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1124\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity cinematic-divider\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>To be continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udcda The Second Thread: Not Illustration, but Identification<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In parallel, another piece of work was underway\u2014not so much artistic as purely investigative. An attempt was made using AI to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list archival-list\">\n<li>Compare Pushkin&#8217;s sketches with real historical figures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But here, too, the result proved rather double-edged:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list archival-list\">\n<li>A likeness was achieved<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Definitive proof was not<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The AI helped us <strong>visualize the hypothesis<\/strong>, but it simply could not confirm it.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Illustration to Reconstruction.
