A multi-part archival drama-detective series about members of noble families from the Vladimir Governorate and Estland, as well as European counts of Venetian descent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Multi-Episode Archival Drama-Detective<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The characters in this saga are not merely representatives of the Tregubov noble family from the Vladimir Governorate, the von Stralborns originating from Estland, and the European counts of Venetian descent, the Derionzinis. Alongside them, other surnames emerge: the Lyalins, Zakharyins, Yunichs, and Molchanovs. Even those figures who appear in this epic only in passing inevitably become part of a complex and intricate plot. And at the center of the story is the marriage of two hussar brothers, the von Stralborns, to the Tregubov sisters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few years ago, while working with the confessional records of the Novosyolki-Penkovo parish in the Rostov uyezd<\/em>, I was searching for information about my ancestors and the estate where they had lived for centuries. It was then, within mid-19th-century documents, that I discovered estate owners with an unusual surname. Over the years, clerks had recorded it by ear, generously applying their imagination: Stramberg, Stramborg, Strambern, Stralbort…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, I should clarify at once: for me, these people are not just abstract neighbors in the district or detached historical figures. They are, so to speak, “my landowners”\u2014the people to whom my ancestors belonged for several generations. The ones who owned serfs, bought and sold them, mortgaged them to the Guardianship Councils, and casually lost them at the card table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judging by the dry lines of announcements in the Senate Gazette<\/em> and numerous archival files, the nobility of some of these gentlemen often ended exactly where financial interest and momentary profit began. Their names regularly appear in lawsuits concerning oppression, excessive extortion, and even physical cruelty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, I have not the slightest desire to act as a judge or, conversely, to turn them into flawless romantic idols in hussar pelisses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My role is that of a calm spectator, curiously watching this archival spectacle, where people\u2014endowed with so much by right of birth\u2014sometimes quite masterfully drive themselves into the traps of their own ambitions and passions. <\/em>Observing these twists of fate has proven to be unexpectedly fascinating. The provincial noble estate as a setting gradually drew me in, not only into a detailed recounting of events but also into their visual embodiment\u2014this story has begun to exist not just in text, but in images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
